Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc. has unveiled the next iteration of its 30mm Precision Grenadier System (PGS), showcasing the latest modification of the system at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) exposition in Washington DC last week.
Barrett and MARS Inc were selected in May as the winners of the xTech Soldier Lethality Competition in support of the U.S. Army’s Precision Grenadier System program.
The PGS is a portable, shoulder-fired, semi-automatic, magazine-fed grenade rifle. The system includes an integrated armament package consisting of the weapon, ammunition, and fire control, enabling rapid precision engagements to destroy targets in defilade and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) at close range.
Barrett has also revealed development of a vehicle-mounted Remote Weapon System (RWS) option, allowing the weapon to be deployed in a variety of combat environments.
The company confirmed that the PGS family will include three planned configurations. The Mod 0, expected for release in 2026, will feature an advanced disturbed reticle fire control system (FCS), five-round semi-automatic fire, a recoil dampening system, and support for four ammunition types. The Mod 1, due in 2027, will expand on those capabilities, adding enhanced Counter-Unmanned Aerial System (CUAS) effectiveness through a refined FCS and proximity-fuzed ammunition to improve target lethality.
The Mod 2 will deliver the full capability required by the U.S. Army’s program of record, combining the features of Mod 0 and Mod 1 with further advances in FCS technology. It is designed to improve lethality, target engagement and handoff, and high-explosive air-burst capability, providing a true squad-level counter-defilade munition.
Barrett CEO Bryan James said, “Announcing these new products at AUSA was the perfect opportunity to showcase how Barrett is utilizing an evolving capability model with upgradable technologies to enhance the operational effectiveness of U.S. and allied forces across all domains.”
Cameron Fraser, Barrett’s program manager for PGS, added, “Barrett continues to rapidly develop the PGS system based on the Picatinny Arsenal requirements to enhance lethality on the modern battlefield. The modular design approach provides immediate capability that is upgradable as technology advances.”
He continued, “The philosophy follows the U.S. Army’s goal to evolve capability to provide an upgradeable solution that can accept technologies as they mature. The PGS will be domestically and internationally available to U.S. State Department approved customers.”
